Women and Wearing Weaves

When did we become so obsessed with not embracing our own hair? I can remember growing up, the most a person was concerned with was straightening the hair to obtain a certain style,

which is still embracing your own hair, just a different form, but were talking about adding or covering hair. I look around and see so many women who refuse to wear their own hair and I can’t help but wonder is it because of feeling pressured or because we believe that’s what men want to see or because it’s what’s seen on the movies and on the television? Wearing a weave can be understood when you are in movies or television to obtain certain roles, but this goes way deep in our communities. The expense of keeping a weave up and/or having one put in, can set a person back from three hundred dollars and up.
